Packing for a family ski trip can feel like preparing for a polar expedition. While you probably don’t need half the things you think you do, there are a few non-negotiables that will make or break your winter adventure. Whether you’re a mountain rookie or a seasoned snow bunny, this list will save you from lugging unnecessary bags through the lodge.
Clothes
Clothing that’s moisture wicking and waterproof will keep you comfortable from first chair to après-ski.
- Base layers
- Ski socks (Smartwool is tried and true. Pack extras in case yours get wet, and only wear one pair under your boots–no layering!)
- Snow boots
- Gloves (Leather palms stand up to tough falls and other wear and tear)
- Goggles
- Neck warmer
- Skull cap with ear flaps for under your helmet, or headband (On the coldest days, even the tiniest bit of exposed skin can sting)
- Ski jacket (One that covers your butt will serve you well on the chairlift)
- Ski pants (We love a warm, soft-shell style that eliminates the need for layering)
- Bathing suit (Many ski resorts have pools!)
Gear to Rent
Skip the airport gear-hauling hassle—even if you own your equipment, renting at your destination can be a total game-changer when you’re flying.
- Helmet (If you have your own, you may want to pack it, especially if you’re particular.)
- Skis
- Ski boots (Same as above, if you’re particular about your boots, wear your own! We love this boot bag that doubles as a carry-on.)
- Poles
- Snowboard
- Snowboard boots
Extras
These small-but-mighty additions that can make or break your day on the mountain.
- Lip balm
- Sunscreen (A small stick that fits in your pocket makes for a quick and easy reapply)
- Hand warmers
- Foot warmers
- Extra hair ties (Braid long hair on snowy days so it doesn’t end up tangled mess at the end of the day)
- Snacks that fit in your pocket (granola bars on the gondola can buy you an extra run or two before heading in for lunch)
- Airtag
