Meet-a-Mom: Carmen Saemmer - Lehigh Valley Moms

Introducing: Carmen Saemmer!

Carmen is director of St. Nicholas Academy in Bethlehem as well as the owner of Set In Stone Performing Arts Studio. We are SO excited for our community to get to know her better!

Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m originally from New Jersey, but I moved to the Lehigh Valley with my parents when I was seven and have called it home ever since. I grew up in the area, attended Freedom High School, and later earned my degree in Communications from Bloomsburg University. A few years later, I completed my teaching certification through Moravian University.

I’ve always had a passion for working with children. As I grew older, that passion naturally evolved into a love for teaching—there’s nothing more rewarding than watching children learn, grow, and gain confidence in themselves. I began teaching at St. Nicholas Academy in 2001 and have truly enjoyed every day since. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of seeing students grow up, graduate, begin their careers, and even return to work at the academy. It’s been an incredibly fulfilling journey.

Pre School Director, performing arts school owner/business director…not to mention MOM…how do you balance it all?

Balance is a word I live by—and something I consistently encourage within both of my work environments. It’s not something that just happens, and it’s certainly not always easy. Like many, I’ve always had to work, so after having children, I became intentional about finding ways to stay organized and balance my schedule and life.

I rely on a combination of tools to help keep things running smoothly: my phone calendar, a paper agenda book, and physical calendars both at work and at the studio. And yes—I love post-it notes! They’re everywhere. Still, there are times when I overextend myself, and I’ve learned to recognize when it’s time to pause and regroup. We’re all human, and it’s not only okay—but necessary—to take care of yourself when you need to.

What does the word “balance” mean to you?

Right now, balance means prioritizing what matters most to me: my family, my peace, and my wellbeing. I’m incredibly fortunate to have an amazing support system of friends and loved ones. I’ve also learned that spending time where I’m most needed is what matters—and if the house is messy or the laundry isn’t done, that’s okay. It’ll still be there tomorrow.

You have been at St. Nicholas Academy since 2001, what made you decide to open Set In Stone Performing Arts Studio?

My daughter and my friend—and now business partner—Felicia were the biggest inspirations behind opening the studio. Felicia had a dream, and I saw it as a wonderful opportunity to be part of something meaningful. After many long conversations, late nights, and careful planning, we decided to take the leap—and we’ve never looked back.

Set In Stone offers so much more than just dance class! What are some of things you are most excited about for this upcoming year?

Set In Stone is so much more than just dance. I’m very excited for our upcoming Theatre Troupe productions—The Little Mermaid and Descendants! These shows are always such a special experience for our students, families, and community. I’m also looking forward to another year of continued growth at the studio. Each season brings new energy, new faces, and more opportunities to learn and shine—and I couldn’t be more proud to be part of it.

I’m sure you have heard the phrase “It takes a village”.- who is yours and how do you use them?

It truly takes a village—and this year, I’ve felt that more than ever.

I’ve always considered myself blessed with a supportive family, but recently, I’ve leaned on them in ways I never imagined. And they’ve shown up every time. My husband has been my number one supporter from the very beginning, always there to encourage and lift me up. My parents and brother have stepped in to help with anything and everything—from transportation for my kids, to emotional support, to hands-on help at both the studio and St. Nicholas.

No matter what the need—big or small—they’ve been there without hesitation. I truly couldn’t do what I do without them, and I’m beyond grateful for the way they support every part of my world.

What’s the best piece of advice you have gotten from another mom?

The best piece of advice? That’s a tough one.

I’ve been fortunate to have so many incredible moms in my life—from my own family to my amazing circle of friends. They’ve been my sounding board, my cheerleaders, and the voices of reason who remind me to take care of myself when I need it most.

If I had to choose just one piece of advice that’s stuck with me, it would be: “Never underestimate what you are capable of.”

This journey—both personally and professionally—has been full of challenges, lessons, and growth. But I’m so thankful for the life I’ve built, and I’m excited for everything that’s still to come.
